LEATHERBACK TURTLES

More

Another trip like no other : exclusive, unique, wild. A unspoiled destination, far away from the crowd, noises, stress, never-ending connections, but in full contact with gentle residents and the vast oceanic surface.
Leatherbacks are one of the rarest turtles to see in the oceans. While we can find some proper research and information about them nesting on beaches in tropical and subtropical latitudes, their lives underwater are mostly unknown. One of the strategies for achieving more information was to monitor their preferred food : jellyfish, and look for them in feeding grounds; and it was successful.

Leatherbacks are the only species of sea turtle that lack scales and a hard shell. They are named for their tough, rubbery skin. Leatherbacks have existed in their current form since the age of the dinosaurs. They are highly migratory, some swim over 15.000 km a year between nesting and foraging grounds. They are also accomplished divers with the deepest recorded dive reaching nearly 1.200 metres —deeper than most marine mammals. Their carapace has a smooth, leathery skin that covers a flexible matrix of bone. The shell has seven ridges running from front to back.

An encounter in the water with a leatherback turtle is a once-in-a-lifetime experience, offering a rare chance to come face to face with the largest turtles on the planet. It is one of the most memorable experiences, catching eye contact always brings a sense of marvel, creating a connection and memory that will last long after your encounter ends.

The leatherback turtle has the widest global distribution of any reptile, with nesting mainly on tropical or subtropical beaches. Once prevalent in every ocean except the Arctic and Antarctic, the leatherback population is rapidly declining in many parts of the world.
The place we are going to is one of the top destinations for encountering these magnificent creatures in the water, with the best sightings from late October to early December, to avoid uncomfortable weather and sea conditions, as the turtles migrate through the region.

Unfortunately, in this territory, the Leatherback turtles are still occasionally hunted by the local community, and some specimens have memories of bad encounters with humans. This is an additional reason for interactions to be always respectful of their living spaces and to avoid stressful conditions.

The group size is limited to max 4 people plus the guides.

Your journey

Expect to be overwhelmed by your emotions while snorkelling with quiet leatherback turtles, but do not underestimate their strength. You will have active unexpected buddies looking for interactions. Though they might be shy at first and avoid you, they sometimes breach the surface with their entire bodies and splash with their back in a myriad of drops shining under the rays of the sun.
Leatherback turtles spend a lot of time at the surface.
Expect warm water temperature (about 30° C) and deep water. Activities at sea will not be allowed in case of strong winds and a rough sea.
